Note from Michael

Here is a copy of Michael’s most recent email. Lots of important information here. If you did not receive it and want to be sure you receive future emails, please email Audrey – Thank you!

Hey everyone!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! The first few Carolers performances are just a week away. Now that Shrek is over, it’s time for the final push to get our music polished for audiences. Below are a few details about how performances will go and what you all can do to prepare in the next few days. It’s a lot of information, but please read through all of it so we can all be on the same page.

Most of our music is ready to perform. A few songs still need some attention. Between now and Saturday, please review the following:
Go Tell it On the Mountain:
  • Tenors and Altos are still having some difficulty with this one.
  • Basses can back off the volume just a bit.
  • Please all review measures 17 – 28
  • Please also review the ending
O Come All Ye Faithful
  • Pay attention to dynamics. Remember, we want to keep the audience’s attention and dynamic variation is a good way to keep music exciting.
  • We are still struggling with the key change. I will attempt to make part tracks this week.
  • We will not be doing the Latin verse. You’re welcome.
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
  • This one is coming along really well.
  • Treat this song as a lullaby – most of it should hang out around mezzo piano, and never louder than mezzo forte.
  • Soloist — Please practice your solos until you can’t get it wrong. You should know your starting notes without needing to think about it. Also, remember not to rush. You have time, let the group follow you.
Silent Night
  • Work on your German.
White Christmas
  • Just to clarify, I’d like the words you’re all singing on the backing to be  “Doop Doop — Doop doo doom.” The last consonant on each one should be very gentle. This is just to help you keep the sound forward — most of the audience shouldn’t even be able to hear the “p” or the “m” at the end.
  • More confidence on the “ahhs”
  • Soloists, compare notes, help each other, and ask me for help when you need. I’ll be working on part tracks for these, too.
It’s About the Cross
  • Again, another one that is coming along well. I was pleased with how it sounded at dress rehearsal.
  • Please practice your transitions from verse to chorus and chorus to bridge
  • Overall, I think we can be more confident. Fake it if you have to, but I believe you guys can do this one well.
  • Polish up the ending.
I would encourage you all to continue helping one another along. For those who are able to, it may also be good for some of you to get together with one another and practice.

Call time
Call time for each performance will be 15 minutes before the start of the performance. Please arrive with hair, makeup, and costumes ready to perform. We will have a short circle-up time for the first 5 minutes to center our hearts and spend some time in prayer. I’ll lead a short devotional at the first performance and then I’ll be asking students to do the same for future circle-ups.
Parents are allowed to attend some performances. Please check the callboard to see which performances outside guests will be allowed to attend. For events where outside guests are not allowed, please plan to wait outside the event for your child. If possible, please prioritize bringing people to our free concert on Dec. 16th rather than other performances.
Parking will depend on the venue. We will try to communicate specific parking directions ahead of time. For those of you driving yourselves, please plan to have an umbrella in case you need to walk a short distance in the rain.
Scheduling Changes & Reminders
Audrey will be sending out a scheduling reminder at the start of each week for performances that week. We will not be adding any performances (except for maybe our TBD Chick-Fil-A gig), but any cancellations or time changes will be included in each email.
If for any reason you will be unable to attend a performance for which you are scheduled, it is very important that you let Audrey or myself know as soon as you can. Please take care of your voices and your bodies. There are some bad bugs going around right now.
Student Directors
There will be a student director at each performance. Addyson Finley will lead group 1 and the full group when all together. Andrew Rutherford will lead group 2 and the full group whenever Addyson is not present.
Student directors are responsible for setting the pitch, tempo, and ending of each song. Please make sure you are connecting with your student director before each song begins and ends.
I will try to be at as many performances as possible. However, most of this is now in all of your hands. Here’s a helpful diagram for learning how to conduct. Even if you aren’t conducting during the performance, it helps you as students to know what your director is doing.

Pizza Order

We will not be offering gluten free pizza at this time.

Dress Rehearsal Details!

While many of you are in the throes of tech week for Shrek, our Carolers dress rehearsal is less than a week away! We wanted to make sure you have the important details as we prepare for November 21st.

Rehearsal will be at US Digital. The schedule originally stated 6p-8:15p, but in the interest of getting in some extra practice, we would like to extend our time to 6p-9p. If you need to leave by 8:15, that is okay, but if you can stay until 9p, please do!

We would also like the following soloists to come at 5p, if possible. Again, this is not required, but if you can come we would love for you to be there. This time is for you!

Addyson, Rylie, Trevin, Andrew, Bailey, Katie, Sarah, and Austin

Costume Details

Please wear your costume pieces to our rehearsal and have your hair done as listed:

Black or Brown Boots

Guys – Black slacks and long sleeve white button up shirt, hair nicely combed or tied back if long

Girls – Long sleeve white button up shirt (and wear leggings or unders), hair curled, either down or half up, or in two braids

Our costume committee will be distributing costume pieces for you to wear during rehearsal and then you will be taking these pieces home. Please take good care of these items. Costume pieces from the warehouse must be returned to the costume committee at the end of our Carolers season. Details for that will be shared later.

Domino’s pizza will be for sale at rehearsal for $1.50 per slice. An order form will be posted on Friday.

For those of you in Shrek this week, break a leg!! We are so excited to see you shine on stage. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Possible Chick-fil-A Performance

The owner of the two Vancouver Chick-fil-A restaurants was at Monday night’s showcase and after seeing you all perform, the Carolers have been invited to perform at his restaurants!

Because our schedule is technically full, we’d like to gauge your interest in this. We would likely add a Chick-fil-A performance on to an already scheduled Group 1 performance and an already scheduled Group 2 performance. Essentially, you would perform at one location, then go straight to Chick-fil-A to perform. This would add one additional performance for each student.

Please complete this survey so that we can gauge interest. Thank you!

Wednesday Note from Michael

The following email was sent from Michael after Wednesday night’s rehearsal. I’m sharing it here for quick and easy access to the tracks. You’ve got this, Carolers!

Hi Everyone!

If you’re receiving this email, it’s because you have a kid in Journey Carolers. Thank you all so very much for the work you’ve been putting in to get our Carolers prepped for performances in a few weeks. I know it adds a lot of extras to the families’ schedules and I want you all to know how much I appreciate the commitment you’ve all made to make this a memorable experience for your kids.
Over the next few weeks, a lot of announcements will be coming to you through the callboard. You should all have access to the callboard and be checking it regularly. Here is a link. Please bookmark it.
In our rehearsal today, I gave the students 5 songs to work on between now and our showcase next Monday, November 7th. It is essential that they come prepared on Monday to give a good performance. There has been some lack of practice the last few weeks, and I would encourage you as parents to please hold your kids accountable to the commitment they have made to this group.
Music and part tracks are available to them to be able to practice in the Google Drive (link here). If they would like a part track for a song and can’t find it in the drive, please email me and I will do my best to make one for them. I’m here as a resource and am happy to provide your kids with what they need to succeed, but I can’t read minds. If they need help, they need to ask for help.
Here are the songs in order of urgency that the students need to practice:

1. It’s About the Cross: Music and Part Tracks are in the drive. NEEDS A LOT OF WORK. Measures 25-36, 47-51, and 58-59 specifically need a lot work. Please focus here.
Also, please pay attention to the rhythm from measures 52 to the end. Practicing with part tracks will help immensely.
2. O Come all Ye Faithful: Tenors and Alto tracks uploaded to the drive. NEEDS WORK
3. Angels We Have Heard on High: Tenors and Alto tracks uploaded to the drive. NEEDS WORK
4. Joy to the World: Polish and lock in. ALMOST READY TO PERFORM

Again, I’m here to answer questions and to help in any way I (reasonably) can do so. The kids did a stellar job rehearsing Jingle Bell Rock this evening, which is a testament to what they can achieve when they practice intentionally. On Monday, I expect all of the showcase songs to be as polished and rehearsed as Jingle Bell Rock was today.

Additional Performances?

The Carolers are popular and we have had numerous requests for more bookings! In the interest of not overtaxing families during the holiday season, we set a limit to performances, but also recognize that many would like to perform as much as possible. To gauge the needs and desires of our group, we have created a survey regarding four more potential bookings. Please fill out this form by Tuesday, November 1st. We will notify you as soon as possible if we add any of these additional performances.

Thank you!

A Note from Michael

Hi All,

Thanks for a fun and productive rehearsal on Monday. With only one rehearsal left until our class showcase, I want to give you all some direction on how to practice and what you should be focusing on right now.

Here are our priorities, in order of importance:

  1. Showcase Material. This includes the following songs:
    • Joy to the World – This one is sitting pretty good as is. Keep it polished.
    • O Come All Ye Faithful  – Here’s a video to help you learn the Latin lyrics!
    • Glory – Again, another good one we’ve practiced a lot.
    • Angels we Have Heard – Make sure to review this one and ask any questions.
    • *It’s About the Cross* – PLEASE practice with the tracks in Drive. I want this song ready to polish next Wednesday so we don’t waste time having to learn it in class.
  2. A handful of other songs that frankly need work:
    • White Christmas – Please review this one. There were a lot of missed notes tonight.
    • Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – There are practice tracks in the drive. Use them.
    • Jingle Bell Rock – This one is really coming together, just make sure to practice!
  3. New Music – Things we’ve learned recently or will learn soon:
    • Go Tell it on the Mountain – Music and tracks are in the drive. Please have it ready to polish on Wednesday.
    • Deck the Halls – Worked on in class last week. Continue working on your own.
    • We Wish you a Merry Christmas – Worked on in class on Monday.
    • Jingle Bells – Worked on in class on Monday.
For showcase on Nov. 7, please plan to wear black pants with your Carolers shirt.
Let’s finish this session out strong!
